“Improving Teaching and Learning is our Greatest Competitive Advantage”
Everyone is an Instructor. Parents teach their kids (and the neighbour’s kids sometimes); Siblings advize one another; Coaches and Trainers show us how to do things; Teachers teach material and ideas; Uncles and Aunts influence their nephe
ws and nieces; Grandparents pass on knowledge; Craftspeople, Business Owners, Athletes …. Everyone is an Instructor.
*The Four Worst Instructor Traits:
“If your eyes glazed over and rolled back inside your head, you likely had a Coach, Trainer, Parent, Teacher… an Instructor of some sort that did these four things….”
1. Talk, Talk, talk, talk, talk…. Talking is NOT Teaching! Do you remember the people in your life that bored you to tears by talking and talking and talking thinking that they were actually teaching you something?! And! They probably had the nerve to get mad at you because you didn’t learn their stuff!! This is the deadliest of instructor sins. Instruction is COMMUNICATION — NOT Talking.
2. Fracture It. Okay, so YES you do have to break things down to teach them — but you have to put them all back together again to make it all have meaning. Too many instructors teach bits and pieces with no overall plan. They don’t give you a picture of what is being learned and they don’t check in to make sure that you are building your own picture — the BIG picture. So, everything becomes a jumble of bits. It’s kind of like taking file folders and files and just throwing them into a cabinet with no plan.
3. Wander, wander, wander. “Where are you going?!” Ever scream this inside your head? Aggghhh. My line here is, “I have a life! Please give me the information and let me go.” I suppose you get where I am going with this one. Those instructors that wander around their topic (usually enjoying the sound of their own voice) sliding this way and that way… they are boring and very hard to follow! If they have no idea where they are heading and they don’t communicate the direction they are heading and why, then how can we follow along on a learning journey?
4. Limited Approach: Obviously just talking is a really limited approach to instruction. Talking and showing a few things on the board or on a powerpoint is quite limited too, and that is about as far as many people get. Maybe if you are lucky, you can fill in some sheets! Or take notes! That’s exciting, right!? Too many instructors are influenced by their past and haven’t heard about the great things we have learned about instruction. We are all influenced by past instructors, and if they were limited, then we tend to be also.
(*These are the top worst traits of instructors who actually care to teach and care to make a difference; obviously, the worst of the worst have traits that shouldn’t even be part of teaching and learning).
I will now show you how and what to add to your present Instruction abilities so that you get the 2 Most Important things first:
attention and engagement
If you don’t have their attention — good luck. And, if you want them to learn something remember they are just like you. When YOU want to learn something, you have to ‘get your hands dirty’ and get engaged with the material otherwise it slips away.
After the two most important things are covered, I will show you a whole bunch more that is missing from most instruction tool-boxes. After 20 years and thousands of classes, I know a thing or two I can share. And, I have a ‘brain compatible’ method you can fit your skills into. It won’t change your methods or get in the way — it will IMPROVE your methods and have you whistling with delight!
